If you want a ship to call the jetty (that means if you want a ship to come and pick you up) signal should be given with the semaphor (the ugly thing in the picture) in the direction from where the ship is expected (now you should be getting scared if you are on an island, .... alone .... without a mobile ....).
When dark this should be completed with a light signal (forgot your flashlight euhhhhh ?????)
